The new president of Ecuador´s Constitutional Court, Hernán Salgado Pesantez, denounced the previous administration for selling sentences. They also found writings that after leaving the Plenum of the Court were changed before arriving at the Secretariat.
The chief justice of the Court assured that there was corruption in the institution and something that caught his attention is that the Legal Direction is in a different building from the Court. He said that they detected external lawyer offices working on Court cases and “solving them” out. They also found 14.000 delayed cases, some of them are very old and have to be judged under the Constitution of 1998, while the current Constitution was adopted in 2008. In his opinion, the previous Court prioritized some cases responding to political reasons and to the Court subjugation by the administration of Rafael Correa. He also made a promise: “We want to dictate quality sentences. If you read sentences of the previous Court, you will notice how tangled they are, they start saying one thing and by the end, they say the opposite. One can figure out right away how they manufactured those absurdities. We want to dictate short and precise sentences. ”
